Executive Functioning
Is your student struggling to keep track of their work? Do they forget to study or turn in their homework? Maybe they're just not sure how to study. Executive Functions are the cognitive processes involved in self management, something schools often fail to teach students. In our sessions we'll explore what skills your student needs to learn in order to manage their own academic experience successfully.
Common skills include Time Management, Planning, Prioritization, Study or Learning Methods, and Self-Advocacy
Content Tutoring
In content sessions, we'll take a holistic approach, making sure students fully master the material rather than just memorize it. We'll identify and fill content gaps, and build confidence and ultimately raise grades. Executive Functioning skills are often supported and made into long term habits here. These sessions teach students how to learn rather than just going over their homework.
Content Tutoring is available in all high school level math, science, and reading/writing.
College Transitioning
Preparing for college can be a difficult and arduous process even for adults. Thankfully, college essays and tests are exceedingly standardized, meaning expertise can make a massive difference. We'll identify student goals and cooperatively work to fulfill admission requirements, whether that means a certain SAT or ACT score, writing a personal statement, or navigating the labyrinthine bureaucracy of applications.
In SAT/ACT prep, we'll go through: General test-taking strategy, Section-specific strategy, Question-specific strategy, Section-specific critical content, Mindful test-taking techniques, Test preparedness
Jump Starts
Many students find themselves struggling to get started on their work. I provide structure and accountability for these students. We'll spending an initial period of time listing out current assignments, prioritizing them based on multiple factors, and briefly monitor their progress. This helps students get past hardest part of doing their work, getting started. In the process, we also review and reinforce best practices and executive functioning skills.
Jump Starts are normally scheduled for 15 or 30 minutes at the beginning of a study period.
Facilitation
For students facing a perilous project, horrifying homework, or just struggling to get their work done, Facilitation may be the solution. When getting started isn't enough, but 1:1 sessions don't fit either, I'll monitor and support a student's work by providing structure, accountability, and guidance rather than direct intervention. Throughout Facilitation, executive functioning skills are supported and reinforced.
Facilitation is generally scheduled in blocks of 90 minutes or longer, multiple days a week.
